Detecting Disordered Eating
This session will address the components of Disordered Eating, which is defined as consistent abnormal eating habits and food behaviors. These behaviors and attitudes toward food are often precursors for more complex eating disorders. Examples include: restrictive dieting, meal skipping, binge eating, restricting major food groups, avoiding food situations and statements of guilt about food. We will then discuss ways to promote a healthy relationship with food. The words used to discuss nutrition and the examples adults set can have a great impact on a student's health.

Youth suicide is a serious public health issue in Utah, with the state consistently ranking in the top five of the nation with the most significant mental health concerns. Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among Utah youth have also increased. A community and state-wide emphasis on prevention is needed. Teachers play a critical role in suicide prevention for current and future students and need more knowledge about the warning signs of suicide and how to facilitate opportunities to strengthen mental well-being.

In this presentation intended for those that oversee extracurricular activities (coaches, advisors, instructors, directors, teachers, etc.), we will review the current culture of extracurricular activities (sport, performing arts, etc.). Participants will be invited to consider ways that they can keep these activities in perspective and bring about the most benefit for their students (and themselves). Strategies for maintaining positive boundaries and relationships with parents will also be emphasized.

Slow Your Roll! Taking a Collective Chill Pill…
Stress and anxiety are no joke! Being in the moment has been shown to enhance everything from job to test performance, physical to relational health, organization to financial stability, and on and on it goes. In this presentation, we will discuss the impact that being present (mindfulness) and chilling out (relaxation) can have on you and our youth. Participants will be helped to recognize what anxiety looks like in youth and what teachers and coaches can do to help. Ideas for how to incorporate these practices into academic and extracurricular activities as a way to improve performance will be discussed.
